Veep hails nurses’ bravery
Vice-President Saulos Chilima has told nurses and midwives that government will take advantage of the current Budget Meeting of Parliament to address some of the challenges they encounter in their profession.
The Veep said this in Lilongwe yesterday during the commemoration of International Nurses Day, adding that nurses and midwives deserve respect and recognition for the sacrifices they make in the course of their work.
He said: “We know your challenges, but we are glad that this commemoration has coincided with the 2021/22 Budget Session. Today, the President [Lazarus Chakwera] will be presenting the State of the Nation Address and I am sure many of the issues you have raised will be addressed in it.”

Chilima hailed the role nurses and midwives played in the Covid-19 fight, saying without their sacrifices the country would have struggled to contain the virus.
“They deserve respect from every Malawian,” he said.
In his remarks, National Organisation of Nurses and Midwives (Nonm) president Shouts Simeza said despite sacrificing their lives, nurses and midwives face many challenges in the course of their work.
He said the challenges include poor resources and pressure of work due to high nurse to patient ratio which was compounded by Covid-19.
Presenting on Covid-19 and its effects on the nursing profession, Beatrice Gundo said the pandemic has claimed lives of many nurses and midwives but the survivors did not backtrack.
During the event, Chilima presented several awards including the best nurses, most improved Nonm branch, highest membership Nonm branch and innovative branch
